The NFIP and Building Codes: Development Standards for Floodplains

The class covers types of floods and floodplains, and how floods damage structures. It goes over and compares FEMA's floodplain regulations and the Uniform Building Code of New York State, including the relationship between FEMA regulations and building codes. We will go over detailed design standards in order to meet FEMA and building code requirements. Key areas to be covered include building design standards, floodways, base flood elevations and design flood elevations, freeboard, flood zones that do not have base flood elevations, floodproofing, manufactured homes, recreational vehicles, historic structures, variances and appeals, and a summary of recent code changes.
