As of Mid-September 2026, over 1,000 people are dead and nearly 5,000 are missing along the China-Nepal border after catastrophic flash flooding inundated the mountainous region on August 27. Hundreds of tourists were in the region taking guided treks through the mountains or making pilgrimages to religious sites. Among these includes 90 Americans who at the time of this writing are unaccounted for. More than 3,000 people had to be evacuated by helicopter, initially the only way to get in or out of the devastated region.

The flooding was caused by a melting glacier that broke apart, sending a torrent of water, ice, mud, rock, and other debris into the narrow valleys below, destroying bridges, pushing aside vehicles, and wiping out entire towns. A warming climate may make situations like this more common as once frozen glaciers and permafrost gradually warm up and begin to melt, causing destabilization of the surrounding land.
